Frequently asked questions

What is a wood stove filter?

exodraft has developed an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) that mounts at discharge point of the chimney, removing most of the flue gas particles producted during the combustion of the fireplace.

The particle filter thus removes the potentially harmful emissions from the wood stove while the integrated Draftbooster chimney fan improves chimney draght and combustion.

How do you use the filter?

Once the filter is installed on the chimney, it will start automatically every time it measures rising temperatures in the chimney. The filter must always be powered on when using the stove.

Which types of chimney can the filter be installed on?

The filter can be installed on any chimney (brick or steel) that has a single, closed fireplace up to 10 kW connected. In general, the filter can be used on all types of chimney. If the filter does not replace the last part of a steel chimney but acts as an extension, the chimney must still comply with the supplier’s instructions / specifications.

The standard chimney adapter has an outer diameter of Ø145 mm and can be mounted on a round chimney. For other chimneys, we can help you find the right adapter.

Which types of fireplace can the filter be used with?

Closed fireplaces up to 10kW.

Who can / should install the filter?

The filter must be installed by an authorised installer.

Can the filter improve combustion and ease lighting?

Yes, the built-in Draftbooster chimney fan optimises combustion and can also help during lighting. See the manual for details.

Can the filter reduce indoor smoke?

Yes, the built-in Draftbooster chimney fan optimises the chimney draught and prevents smoke from spilling into the room during refueling of the stove.

Should the filter use power?

Yes, the filter must be connected to a standard 230V, earthed power outlet.

Is the filter self-cleaning?

Yes, the filter is equipped with an automatic cleaning function. However, the filter should be manually inspected and cleaned at least once a year. This can be done by a chimney sweep during sweeping.

What maintenance does the filter require?

The filter should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year. This can be done by a chimney sweep during sweeping.

Can the filter remove smoke odours?

No, the filter can remove particles, but not smoke odours.

Can the filter remove visible smoke?

Yes, because the smoke is primarily made up of particles that will be removed by the filter, visible smoke will largely disappear. During the lighting phase, there may be some visible smoke, consisting primarily of condensing water vapor.

What does the filter remove and how effective is it?

The filter removes most of the particles that are formed during combustion of the fireplace. The filter can reduce the number of particles by 95% and reduce the total particle mass by 70-75%, thus removing most of the potentially harmful particles from the flue gas.

Flue gas particles have a size less than 0.1 μm which is 1000 times smaller than a human hair. Since the human throat is only capable of capturing particles larger than 2.5 μm, the smaller particles continue to lungs and blood vessels, causing asthma, breathing problems and/or inflammations and are therefore damaging to your health

Is the filter noisy?

The filter comes with an integrated Draftbooster chimney fan which increases the chimney draught. This emits constant but very low noise. During self-cleaning, the filter will emit an audible sound for a few seconds.

Which materials is the filter made from?

All plate parts inside the filter are made from stainless steel.

How long is the power cable?

The power cable is 5 metres.

What should the chimney sweep know?

You must inform your chimney sweep that the filter is installed. The filter must be unplugged from the power outlet while work is being carried out on the chimney.

What colours are available for the filter?

It can be supplied in glossy stainless steel or in matte black (painted).

Will the chimney sweep still be able to access the chimney from the top?

This requires installing the filter with a mounting adapter with built-in cleaning hatch. If there is no cleaning hatch in the mounting adapter, the chimney sweep will have to access the chimney from below. If you have questions about this, we recommend contacting your chimney sweep.

Does the filter have local approvals?

Yes – The DIBt (German Institute for Building Technology) has granted the particle filter a general technical approval (abZ*).
If you want to read more about this (in German), then click here:

What is the height of the filter?

The filter has a height of approx. 95 cm.

What is the power consumption of the filter?

The filter has a maximum power consumption during operation of 90W. The typical consumption during operation is 60W. Standby power consumption is 2W.

Should the filter be turned on / off?

No, the filter just needs to be powered and will then turn on automatically once it measures a temperature increase in the chimney.

Can I use the stove without the filter turned on?

No, the filter must always be connected to a power source and switched on as soon as it is installed on the chimney. If the wood-burning stove is used without the filter turned on, the filter can be damaged.

In the event of a power outtage, the stove can still be used for limited periods. Just be mindful that this can lead to increased soot deposits in the interior part of the filter, requiring more frequent maintenance. As soon as the power is back, ensure that the filter is working normally.

What should the chimney sweep do?

The chimney sweep should inspect the filter in accordance with the ‘Service’ section of the user manual.
